CODE OF ETHICS OF JOURNAL PUBLISHING
- Identifying the journal's name, its scientific scope, its timeline, and its accreditation.
- Identifying the membership of the editorial board.
- Establishing the relationship between authors, publisher, peer reviewers, and other contracted parties.
- Respecting the confidentiality of research contributors, authors, editors, and peer reviewers.
- Applying intellectual property rights norms and regulations, in particular those concerning copyright.
- Conducting policy reviews and communicating them to authors, the publishing committee, peer reviewers, and readers.
- Preparing the code of conduct guidelines for editors and peer reviewers.
- Publishing the journal on a regular basis.
- Ensuring that the resources required for sustainable publication are available.
- Establishing a network of cooperation and dissemination.
- Preparing licensing and other legal aspects.
CODE OF ETHICS OF EDITORS
- Improving the standard of publication.
- Ensuring that the quality of published papers is maintained.
- Upholding the right to express an opinion.
- Maintaining the integrity of the academic record of the author.
- Issuing corrections, clarifications, retractions, and disclaimers when required.
- Holding authors responsible for the content and any statements in their paper, while the journal is responsible for style and format.
- Evaluating editorial and peer review policies in order to increase accountability and minimise errors.
- Preventing authors or third parties from influencing an assessment towards a non-objective judgement.
- Encouraging authors to refine their manuscript until it is worth publishing.
CODE OF ETHICS OF PEER REVIEWERS
- Evaluating manuscripts and submitting a review to the editor in order to determine the manuscript's viability.
- Reviewing manuscripts promptly and in accordance with scientific guidelines, covering the data collection process, the legality of the work, and the results.
- Checking that revised manuscripts comply with the journal's standards.
- Motivating authors to improve their manuscript by offering reviews, feedback, and advice.
- Maintaining the privacy of the author by keeping the findings and recommendations confidential.
- Declining to review manuscripts in which the reviewer is directly or indirectly involved.
- Following the peer review criteria set by the editors.
- Reviewing the substance of the manuscript rather than correcting grammar, punctuation, and typographical errors.
- Upholding the principles of factuality, novelty, and originality, and prioritising the benefit of the manuscript for the development of research, technology, and innovation.
- Remaining objective and free from external influence.
- Ensuring that the contents of the manuscript remain confidential before publication.
- Reviewing only manuscripts within the reviewer's area of expertise, and recommending another expert when the topic falls outside it.
- Remaining open-minded towards viewpoints that differ from the reviewer's own.
- Declining the review, and informing the editor as early as possible, if the editor's time limit cannot be met.
- Providing honest, objective, and clear arguments for the outcome of the review. The possible recommendations are:
- accepted without revision;
- accepted with minor revision (no further peer review needed after the author's revision);
- accepted with major revision (returned to peer review after the author's revision);
- rejected, with a recommendation to submit elsewhere;
- rejected, with a recommendation not to publish because the manuscript is scientifically deficient or shows serious breaches of the author's code of ethics.
- Not using reviewed manuscripts for the interests of the reviewer or of third parties without the author's permission.
CODE OF ETHICS OF AUTHORS
- The author is responsible for the work and the contents of the manuscript, including the methods, analyses, calculations, and details.
- The author responds to the comments of peer reviewers professionally and promptly.
- The author informs the editor if the manuscript is to be withdrawn.
- The author describes the limitations of the study.
- The author respects a request from the publisher not to release the results before publication through interviews or other media.
- The author informs the editor when the manuscript forms part of a phased, multidisciplinary, or multi-perspective study.
- The author declares that the manuscript is original, has not been published elsewhere, and has not been submitted to another publisher.
- The author notifies the editor or publisher immediately if an error is discovered.
- Written permission and acknowledgement are given for the use of material from other copyrighted publications.
- The author properly cites the work of others used in the manuscript.
- The author acknowledges previous researchers when presenting new findings or improvements to existing work.
- The author does not list in the bibliography publications that were not actually consulted.
- The author is prepared to provide, on request, evidence that the research met research ethics requirements, including field notes and raw data.
- The author responds adequately to comments or feedback received after publication.
